[14:08]<+camerongray> Calum: You missed the amusement(?) last night with LM :P
[14:08]<@Calum> oh?
[14:09]<+camerongray> Someone was looking for a bog-standard 10/100 5 port switch, My logic was "You are looking at ones in the $7.99 to $15 price range, they are all pretty much the same, just get the cheapest one
[14:10]<@BC_Programming> I just thought of a great comeback to that exchange also
[14:10]<+camerongray> Of course LM completely confuses them by telling them to make sure it supports <insert feature standard on all switches made in the last 10 years here>
[14:10]<+camerongray> Eventually, just before she leaves I get - "<LM> I don't get it camerongray in a build you will be adding ssd's and this and that and when it comes to a network device it's cheap cheap"
[14:10]<+camerongray> Annoyingly she left before I could reply
[14:11]<@Calum> I've only seen LM in a few times, are they on the forum as well or just a chatter?
[14:11]<@Calum> that's pretty funny though, will keep an eye on them
[14:11]<@BC_Programming> wait LM?
[14:11]<@BC_Programming> it was LC yesterday
[14:11]<@BC_Programming> stop changing your story bro
[14:12]<@BC_Programming> though I guess LM=LostMonkey?
[14:12]<@Calum> clarification required, LM or LC?
[14:12]<+camerongray> It was LM yesterday :P
[14:12]<@BC_Programming> LIES
[14:12]<@Calum> lol
[14:12]<+camerongray> haha
[14:12]<+camerongray> Calum: Lisa_Maree on the forum
[14:12] * @BC_Programming scrolls back
[14:12]<@Calum> ah
[14:12]<+camerongray> She seems to know her stuff but just gets really annoying at times
[14:12]<@Calum> well that makes sense
[14:13]<@BC_Programming> you win this round
[14:13]<+camerongray> lol
[14:13]<+camerongray> I mean - It's a super low end switch - Get the cheap one :P
[14:13]<@Calum> exactly, there's little or no difference
[14:13]<+camerongray> Oh, the other one was brilliant - She claimed that one of them had a more efficient power adapter
[14:13]<+camerongray> IT'S A SWITCH! :P
[14:13]<@Calum> lol
[14:14]<@BC_Programming> such pro, many switch, much efficient
[14:14]<+camerongray> wow
[14:14]<@Calum> you guys would've laughed at me earlier, I did an ultra noob thing
[14:14]<+camerongray> Oh dear :P
[14:15]<@Calum> some background: I got that Shuttle working with the Xeon chip, installed Debian, all good. Took it into the other room and hooked it up to the powerline network adapter, left it a while
[14:15]<@Calum> pinged it, no response...messed with the powerline adapters, seemed fine...tested cassie's laptop on the adapter, connecting OK
[14:16]<@Calum> figured out it wasn't actually booting, so spent about 40 minutes checking things over...I removed the graphics card, did it need it to work? Seems the same without it...tried another one, etc
[14:16]<@Calum> shifted my focus from part to part, spent ages on it
[14:16]<@Calum> eventually realised it had halted after POST because it was waiting on "no keyboard detected, press F1 to continue"
[14:16]<+camerongray> AHAHA!
[14:16]<@BC_Programming> hah
[14:17]<+camerongray> Oh yeah - I had a question for you :P
[14:17]<+camerongray> Yodel are idiots
[14:17]<@BC_Programming> that's not a question
[14:17]<@Calum> that's a statement
[14:17]<+camerongray> Blah blah, my alcohol has gone missing :P
[14:17]<@Calum> haha
[14:17]<+camerongray> How can I remove thermal paste without alcohol? :P
[14:17]<@BC_Programming> lick it off, you're Scottish so your saliva is 11% alcohol by volume
[14:18]<+camerongray> HAHAHA!
[14:18]<@Calum> that depends what kind of thermal paste it is. If it's not old and dried up, just a paper towel or something will wipe it off...if not, hm. Vodka?
[14:18]<+camerongray> I thought about vodka - Just wasn't sure about it
[14:18]<@Calum> I use Akasa TIM remover because I've had a bottle of it for years, before I knew you could buy rubbing alcohol heh
[14:18]<+camerongray> I tried that but it's idling pretty hot
[14:18]<@Calum> but yeah, something without too many additives should be alright
[14:18]<+camerongray> Think around 50c on a Xeon E3-1220
[14:18]<@Calum> cheap and nasty supermarket vodka
[14:19]<+camerongray> haha - Just have to have the shame buying it :P
[14:19]<@Calum> heh
[14:19]<+camerongray> Bit like buying denture cleaning tablets and wanting to say "It's for my keyboard keys"
[14:19]<@Calum> the main thing with purer alcohol is that it evaporates quickly, the issue with using things like vodka is what else is in there that might get left behind. But I'd say if you buy some standard vodka, and make sure there's no residue, should be fine
[14:20]<@BC_Programming> It's interesting to try to come up with with purchase combinations that make people go wtf
[14:20]<@Calum> hah yeah, apparently they're also good for cleaning header tanks on cars but I don't want to have to buy them
[14:20]<+camerongray> BC_Programming: Oh yeah :P
[14:20]<@BC_Programming> like three cucumbers, a cantaloupe, a container of vaseline and two boxes of rubber golves
[14:20]<+camerongray> haha!
[14:21]<+camerongray> That almost happened at uni - My friend asked on Facebook group chat - "I'm in Tesco, anyone want anythign" - Oh the requests
[14:21]<@BC_Programming> actually any item X paired with only Vaseline could raise questions come to think of it
[14:21]<@BC_Programming> "Oreo cookies and Vaseline"
[14:22]<@BC_Programming> one evil idea is to change people's phones so they autocorrect "hey" into something embarassing
[14:22]<@BC_Programming> like "I pleasure myself to you"
[14:22]<+camerongray> HAHAH!
[14:22]<@BC_Programming> imagine the awkward situation you can cause when their mom messages them "you around" and they respond with "hey"
[14:22]<@BC_Programming> you can destroy families
[14:23]<+camerongray> lol!
[14:23]<+camerongray> I now have a new plan
[14:23]<+camerongray> Always trying to come up with interesting things when someone leaves their PCs unlocked
[14:24]<+camerongray> Turns out when you change someone's twitter description to "I love 1D" and their 'Name' to "Niall Follow Me" - They gain 20 followers :P
[14:24]<+camerongray> Oh, you have to follow one direction as well of course
[14:27]<+camerongray> Calum: Xeon E3-1220 in 1u server idling at 45c - Is that too hot?
[14:27]<+camerongray> That's the core temperature
[14:28]<@Calum> idle temps aren't really a good guide tbh
[14:28]<+camerongray> Cool
[14:28]<@Calum> it doesn't seem unreasonable
[14:28]<+camerongray> I'll fire up Prime 95 :P
[14:28]<@Calum> yeah put it under some load and see what you get
[14:28]<@Calum> frankenShuttle idles at 48C, loads at 55
[14:29]<@Calum> found out the fan control has 4 modes - low which is really quiet and hot, medium which is a lot louder and much better temps, and high which is insanely loud and no better on temps. Then there's smart fan which seems to keep the fan low, then ramp up to insanely loud when the CPU's already overheating
[14:30]<+camerongray> lol
[14:30]<@Calum> what I'm trying to saym heh, is that you might find the load temperature isn't much higher, but either way it's fine up to 90C or so, so don't worry too much
[14:30]<+camerongray> Under Prime95 Blend it runs up to 75c and then the fans will ramp up and bring it down to 70 again
[14:30]<+camerongray> So looks okay
[14:30]<+camerongray> Just was a bit worried as I'd just cleaned the paste with a cloth
[14:31]<@Calum> yeah, that's cool then
[14:31]<@Calum> normally as long as the paste isn't ancient, and hard and dry, a cloth is fine
[14:31]<@BC_Programming> hmm seems I have to start over again and re-learn KSP
[14:31]<+camerongray> Cool
[14:31]<+camerongray> Yeah - It was the factory paste from around 2012 or so
[14:31]<@Calum> ah fair enough
[14:31]<+camerongray> From when I stole the CPU to flash/brick the Foxconn board
[14:32]<@Calum> ah, that reminds me - I got to try my Foxconn board today, worked perfectly with an IB CPU
[14:32]<@Calum> it came with the latest BIOS flashed
[14:32]<+camerongray> Sweet!
[14:33]<@BC_Programming> I need to remember to get a Monitor
[14:33]<@Calum> ended up buying an i3 off the MM as CEX still haven't got their act together
[14:33]<+camerongray> What do you think of it? Not bad for £20 :P
[14:33]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah, saw that!
[14:33]<@Calum> I've literally only powered it on and gone to BIOS so far, haven't installed it yet. Seems OK though for £16 ;)
[14:33]<@Calum> BC_Programming: remember to buy a monitor
[14:33]<+camerongray> YOu got it for less :P
[14:34]<+camerongray> What's the whole deal with paste "burn in time" orr whatever it's called?
[14:34]<@Calum> basically a myth
[14:34]<+camerongray> Ahh cool
[14:34]<+camerongray> Ordered some MX-4 and alcohol from Amazon - Shame Yodel lost it
[14:34]<@Calum> you might see 1-2C difference after 6 months or something but yeah...not exactly earth shattering
[14:34]<+camerongray> It's been delivered, but not to me!
[14:34]<@BC_Programming> lol
[14:34]<@Calum> decent paste doesn't need burn in time anyway
[14:34]<+camerongray> Yeah
[14:34]<@Calum> MX doesn't
[14:35]<@BC_Programming> somebody just told me their house was haunted
[14:35]<@BC_Programming> I pointed out their house was built last year
[14:35]<+camerongray> HAHA!
[14:35]<@BC_Programming> So I guess it would be haunted by a modern ghost
[14:36]<@BC_Programming> "woooOooo! what is your Wifi password? WoooOooo!"
[14:36]<+camerongray> hehe
[14:36]<+camerongray> My friend set his WiFi key to "Look on the back" - Pretty clever
[14:36]<+camerongray> So when you ask "what's your key" he'll say "look on the back" and watch people getting confused looking for a sticker on the router
[14:36]<@Calum> lol
[14:36]<@BC_Programming> like naming a dog Askem
[14:37]<+camerongray> HAHA!
[14:40]<@Calum> managed to sell the 10 remaining servers btw, now I have space for more random stuff!
[14:40]<+camerongray> nice!
[14:40]<@Calum> got the guy to agree to taking the one without a heatsink and some other related rubbish, too ;)
[14:41]<@Calum> picking up some cheap cases at the weekend, and then I just need to pick up two more cheap Xeons - then I'll have 5 dirt cheap quad core setups
[14:42]<+camerongray> Awesome!
[14:43]<@Calum> looking forward to OCing them as well, 775 was fun to overclock
[14:43]<@Calum> you kids, with your unlocked multipliers...;)
[14:43]<+camerongray> haha!
[14:44]<@Calum> I do miss the days of cheap 4.4GHz i3 systems though, I wish there was a way to unlock the multiplier on SB or something
[14:44]<@BC_Programming> Space Engine is awesome
[14:44]<@Calum> even the £30 Celerons would be amazing if you could clock them
[14:44]<@BC_Programming> Zooming out from the Earth is a humbling experience
[14:50]<@Calum> right...time to get some sleep, catch you later
